Summary: Grimes Glen is the best and easiest to visit of the several glens in the Naples New York area. A 1 mile creek walk will reward you with two 60' waterfalls and some impressive gorge walls. Another 60' waterfall awaits the more adventurous and limber.

Grimes Glen is located in Naples New York. The glen is opened to the public and features three waterfalls, all around 60' high. The first two waterfalls are easily seen, but you have to do some strenuous and possibly dangerous climbing to see the third waterfall. This is the best, and easiest to visit, of several glens in the area.

The Glen is located at the end of Vine Street. There is a sign for Grimes Glen at the corner of Vine Street and Main. Grimes Glen is the only of the many scenic gorges in the Naples area that has any signage. There is a parking area at the end of Vine Street, and another sign telling you that you are Grimes Glen. There is a trail at the beginning of the gorge which crosses the creek on a bridge. However you will eventually be forced to just walk up the creek if you want to see the waterfalls.

The first waterfall is a tributary that falls into the left side (facing upstream) of the gorge. This is known as French Hill Falls. This falls is about a 1/2 mile from the parking area.

The second waterfall is about 1/4 mile past the first waterfall. Here the main stream drops 60 feet into a little ampitheatre. The falls is only 60 feet high, but the surrounding walls are around 200 feet high. This is the end of the line unless you are willing to do some climbing. There are some ropes that will help you climb up the steep slopes next to the falls. Unfortunately the ropes leave you precariously balanced at the base of a 10' wall of rock with no obvious place to go. This is not easy, and a slip could be fatal. I have now been there twice, and both times I have failed to make it to the upper gorge.

The Naples area is full of glens and gullies (I am not sure what the difference is). Tannery Creek is the closest. It too is located in Naples at the end of Tannery Creek road, which is on the opposite side of Main Street about 1/2 mile south of Vine. Conklin's Gully and Clark's Gully are both northeast of Naples off of Route 245.
