Agate Falls

August 2001

State: Michigan

Location: Western part of the U.P., on MI-28, east of Bruce Crossing.

Height: 40

Crest: 60

Summary: This is a pretty waterfall, and relatively easy to get to. Stop by and see it on your way to or from Bond Falls.

Agate Falls is a Michigan State Scenic Site 6.5 miles east of Bruce Crossing on MI-28. There is a roadside park (Joseph F. Oravec roadside park) just past the bridge over the Ontonagon River. This roadside has been renovated since I visited the falls in 2001. Back then the trail led to a lookout with a very obstructed views of the falls. With some effort you could scramble down to the river to get some very good views of the falls, or scramble up the river banks to get to the old railroad bridge over the falls. The bridge is now part of a snowmobile trail.

Based on what they did to Bond Falls, I imagine the access to Agate Falls has been greatly improved.

[Lake Superior] Nearby Falls

Bond Falls is just around the corner. From Agate Falls, go east on MI-28 and take a right onto Agate road.
